Rates:

 $75 / hour*

 * I have limited sliding scale slots for low-income writers.

Please contact me to inquire about services and scheduling.

About me:

I have taught in the summer MFA program in the Writing discipline at Bard College since 2019, and have worked individually with poets for over 20 years.  I have also taught at UC Berkeley, Naropa, NYU, The New School, Pratt Institute, The University of San Francisco, Mills College, Poet's House, and the Poetry Project.  I currently teach poetry at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

Services:

I work with people on developing manuscripts, as well as editing individual poems and groups of poems.  I am also available to consult on the possibilities for publication—journals, chapbook and book prizes, and presses that would be aesthetically aligned with your work.

TESTIMONIALS

I loved my consult. Julian asked me all the right questions. The read was done with great care and empathy. As a reader, Julian balances support and criticism. Adding to this brilliance is their knowledge of linguistics and history. This allowed for a kind of depth that inspired me to push my creative limits.  Julian was generous with their insight and experience regarding publishing and poetry—no gatekeeping! Additionally, being both native and LGBTQ+ like myself, there were things I could simply trust and didn’t need to explain. The turnaround time of the work was quick and qualitative. I hope to work with Julian again.  –Jodi Lin (they/them)

It is always a privilege to speak personally with your favorite poet about their work. However, to receive feedback and guidance from Julian on my own work has been a greater blessing than I could have imagined; Julian has continued to provide an unparalleled and much-needed boost to my poetic moral. Their incredible ability to wield language radically is so firmly grounded in immense knowledge of etymology, syntax and rhetoric and their varying functions. Julian asks questions of my work that both require so much of me and finally make me feel that my work (even in its intrinsic illegibility) is more than legible enough for discussion, critique, and, most importantly, my effort and energy as an aspiring poet.  –z.No scott

Julian is a top-notch editor. A top-notch person. With wonderful expertise, patience and resourcefulness, you are in the right hands, the right mind to build a poem, a novel, to guide you.  –Nicholas DeBoer, editor of Elderly

Julian has been a great confidant and reader of my poems, working to help hone and also innovate. Moving at whatever pace makes sense. Bringing a passion for poetry, and accomplished experience to the table.          –Michael Gardner
